New Bollywood Dances

Hi guys!

Sorry I’ve been so slow with making videos – the Google dance studio has eaten my life. =)

We’ve done a few new Bollywood dances, first to Mast Kalandar from “Heyy Babyy”:
Here are the steps slowly:

and here it is with music:

The second dance we’ve done lately is Zoobie Doobie from 3 Idiots:
Here are the steps:

And here it is with the music:

Thanks for coming to class! It’s always great to see you… for those who haven’t been in awhile, the Oracle Bollywood class is on Fridays at 11 am. I have also been teaching these Bollywood routines in Around the World class at Google, Tuesday and Thursday at 4 pm. Finally, we do at least one Bollywood in Zumba class, Mondays at 8:20 am at Reach, or Thursdays at 10 am at 24 hr fitness.

See you soon!
Anna

Favorite New Style

Everyone asks me what my favorite styles of dance is.  And I really don’t have an answer (really – I’m not just holding out on you!)  I do really like West Coast Swing.  And I’m also enjoying Bhangra and Bollywood.

But I’m getting to be a fan of this new styles, Quebradita, that I’m bringing into Zumba class.  It is just so much fun!  The syncopated rhythms and all the jumping around is pretty crazy – quite a challenge actually.

Here’s the steps slowly:

And here’s with the song “El Ritmo Caliente” from Zumba 22:

Some people say that each style is like a language. I like to think of different dance styles as having a “mood” that goes with them. I guess it’s not surprising that I like lots of “happy” or “joyous” styles of dance (big shocker with my personality). But I really do like the variety of dances for the variety of mood. If I only did Bhangra and Quebradita, I would get bored with all the happy (I know that sounds strange). But it’s one of the reasons I really like Argentine Tango (for it’s moody darkness) or American Waltz (for its wistful feeling). I enjoy all the dances for their particular mood – just one style would get boring.

What’s your favorite style of dance, and why? Comments below!

Bailadora Samba

This routine takes some steps from Beto Perez and some from Tanya Beardsley, and some from me – put it all together for a nice fast samba!

Here are the steps slow:

And here with the music:

If you’re looking for an authentic taste of Brazil to keep you warm (and full!) on these cold winter days, you can check out the excellent Brazilian food at Senzala in Sunnyvale. Besides very tasty dishes at totally affordable prices, they have many special music and dance nights with guest artists.

See you in Zumba class!

Don’t Stop Samba Steps

Have you told a friend about Zumba?

In this Holiday season, give the gift that keeps on giving – bring a friend to Zumba class so they can discover how much fun it is to dance and sweat out all their worries!

A couple guest passes to class make a great gift for your friends so they can remember to work out with you – and have a blast!

This super cute Samba track is from the Zumba CD, it’s called Don’t Stop:

And with the music:

Zumba routine for “African Beat 2″

This is a crazy track – it has lots of different rhythms and styles.  While some of it sounds “African” other parts sound more “Middle Eastern”.  I mixed some steps from Tanya Beardsley with some of my own for this choreography:

And here it is with music:

This track might be hard to find on its own, as it’s from the Zumba CD that’s meant for teachers. But it may be available on iTunes – check it out.

Irish Ceili Steps for “American Wake”

This dance makes me so happy – I can’t help but smile every time we do it.  Hope you like it too!

The steps (slowly) for “American Wake (The Nova Scotia Set)” from the Riverdance Album:

And with the music:

By the way, I dance “Irish Ceili” in the Starry Plough style from Berkeley, CA. This is a casual style developed for social dancing, not the “high style” that is used in performances or competitions. If you would like to try this kind of Irish dancing, check here for details on Monday night social dancing in Alameda, CA.

Rumbagitation Salsa steps

Howdy Zumba dancers – hope you’ve been enjoying our salsa steps to “Rumbagitation” from the group Fatal Mambo.  Apparently they are a group of salsa musicians from the south of France, which is why they sing their salsa in French.  It’s got great rhythm, reminding me a lot of the Afro-Haitian music as well as traditional salsa.

Here are the steps we’ve been using:

And here it is with music:

See you in class!

Diwali Dandia and Garba Performance

Thanks to the IGN for inviting me to help out with Diwali 2009 at Google – there were many aspects to the Diwali celebration:   IGN made a beautiful display of candles in the shape of temples and stars all over Charlie’s Patio, great food in Charlie’s cafe, and of course, dancing!

We had only 2 weeks to put together a dandia / garba performance.  At first we were just going to demonstrate a few interesting dandia patterns, and then teach dandia.  But it developed into a whole four song medley and choreography – it’s always hard to “Keep it Simple!”   Thank you to Ramya, Sugeeti, and Jatin for helping me find the right music to edit together (and thank you to the group for putting up with my rough draft edits!)  Thank you to Sahil for helping remind me to K.I.S.S. whenever possible.  =)  Also thank you to Jatin, Vandana, Piyush, Sugeeti, and all the dancers who gave great suggestions for the choreography / dandia and garba patterns.

Big thank you to Vandana, Meghna, and Sai for helping organize costumes.  The jewelry for the ladies was so much fun!  I don’t think I’ve ever had so much volume of jewelry on at the same time!
