8 Week Salsa Intensive Class at Google

Have you always wanted to learn salsa?

Here is your chance – we are going to run a special 8 week salsa intensive course March 1 through the end of April.  We will meet every Monday at 5 pm in the Google Dance Studio (CL 3).  I will be teaching this LA style salsa (on 1) class with the G2G ballroom team – Gem, Alexander, Heidi, and Derrick!  For those who have done cuban rueda salsa at Google before, this is different – we will be teaching the kind of salsa were you dance with just one partner, not in a circle switching partners.

If you’ve never done salsa before, this class will be perfect for you – we will start from the very beginning and explore the basic steps, how to lead and follow, and how to move like a salsa dancer!

For those who have done a little salsa, this class will be great for you as well – we will move beyond the basics quickly and progress through turns and spins, fun variations, shines, and even some dips!  This class will be a chance to move beyond the basics that are commonly taught in drop in lessons and get into the really fun stuff.

This class will get you ready for our big Cinco de Mayo salsa party (yes, on the 5th of May).  We are hoping to have a live salsa band and really kick off the dance studio here on campus.  And you gotta have your salsa ready for a party like that – so get started with our salsa class March 1st.

Check the dancestudio internal link for more information and registration.

See you soon,

Anna

The new Google Dance Studio

Howdy all!

DSC_8142

We built a dance studio in Google headquarters, Mountain View, CA!

Seriously – a big, big freaking dance studio, with 23 classes a week – and I get to manage it!  I couldn’t be happier (or more busy).  More than half of our classes are taught by volunteer Googlers who are experienced dancers / teachers in their particular style.  Our Google volunteer classes are in such styles as:

  • Lindy Hop Swing
  • Bellydance
  • Ballroom dancing – Cha Cha and Rumba, Foxtrot and Waltz
  • Bhangra Performance Troupe
  • Capoeira
  • Cuban Salsa Rueda
  • Intermediate / Advanced Hip Hop
  • Argentine Tango

I am so proud of all the Google volunteer teachers – they are doing a really good job supporting their students, planning fun field trips, and getting new people excited about dance.

We also have classes taught by PlusOne professional staff, and we hope to continue to expand these offerings.  Right now we have 2 yoga classes per week, 1 Bollywood dance class with Shaira Bhan, 1 Zumba class with Alicia Langlais, and various classes with myself.  We were lucky enough to be able to continue all the classes I was already teaching at Google (Hip hop, Around the World, and Zumba).  Further, we were able to add special offerings like “Back to the 80s” Aerobics, and “How to dance at a Club or Party: An Analytical Approach”.

DSC_8180The studio still needs a lot of work before it turns into its fully developed self – we want to decorate the space as a nightclub / lounge, and have dance parties, events, special guest workshops, etc.  We are still working out all the details of the facility (changing rooms, an elevation riser for the teachers to stand on, clocks on the wall, etc), but I am very excited about how well everything has gone so far.

If you are a Googler who has ideas / suggestions about the dance studio program, please shoot me an email at my internal address.

Thanks to everyone outside Google who has to be much more patient with me as I have been so busy and haven’t been as responsive in my other classes / arenas.

Hope to see you soon at the studio!

Anna performing Rumba / Tango at Starlite

Wow – it’s amazing what you can find on youtube!

I’ve got my hair in a medium length bob – kind of poofed out, and it was bright red at the time, though you can’t tell because the lighting is so dark.

Steve Vasco choreographed this routine for the Starlite teachers to perform at Winter showcase a few years back.  It was part American rumba, part International rumba, lots of tricks, some contemporary, and some Argentine tango – overall quite fun!
At the end my top got caught on Gavin’s vest buttons – but other than that it all went well.

What to do in NYC

I love New York City during the Holiday season, and this past trip was no exception.  The whole city hums with energy and every building is decorated with lights and greenery.  Beautiful!

Mostly I went back East to visit my friends, but here’s a little top 10 fun things to do in NYC:

Best Dessert BarKyotofu in Midtown. I tried the dark chocolate mochi cake, which was delicious, especially with the matcha green tea spread and cappucino foam topping.

Kim tried the black sesame tofu custard dessert, which despite sounding a little odd was super yummy.  We couldn’t figure out what the tasty syurp side sauce was – but whatever it was (persimmon?) it was great.

They also have dinner food, which we didn’t try, and a wide variety of alchohol.

Sake pairings with dessert anyone?

Best Workspace in NYC:  So my friend from high school (Michael Schupbach) has the coolest job ever.  Well, I think my job is pretty cool, but he gets major cool points for having worked on Sesame Street, has created his own show that aired on Disney for several seasons, and now runs his own puppet and prop making workshop out in Alphabet City at the bottom of NYC.

So if you’re in NYC and want to see the coolest place in the world to work, check out the puppet kitchen.  You can see all kinds of furry, fuzzy monsters on their way to being created.

What’s on the drawing board?  Maybe some art work for the Little Prince that could turn into a stage show or television show!

Best Place to Go Dancing:  If you like Bhangra (Energetic dancing from the Punjabi region of India), then you will love dancing at Basement Bhangra.  This once a month party has been going on for 10 years!  Check out DJ Rehka and DJ AV as they spin the best bhangra beats to keep the crowd dancing.  There was a short bhangra lesson first (amusing and easy to follow), followed by people arriving in waves to dance until 3 in the morning.  Watch out, the drinks at S.O.B.s (which apparently stands for South of Brazil) are expensive, so if you like to have a few before you dance, you might want to prepare elsewhere.  Then again, everything in NYC is expensive, so I guess I shouldn’t really comment.  The waitstaff at S.O.B.s was great though – I really appreciated that they gave me a pitcher of water to drink (for free) – I hate dancing and being thirsty!  Even if you don’t like to dance, this is a fun party just to watch, especially as the members of NYC Bhangra were there in force, and showing off some great dance moves.

Best Brunch:  Maybe it was the good company, but I really enjoyed my brunch at “B Cafe” on the Upper West Side.  This Belgian themed restaurant had good Belgian beer, fries, waffles… all things Belgian!  I really appreciated the warm and cozy atmosphere (and pleasant lighting) after being rained on and getting my feet soaking wet.  I tried the vegetarian omlette, which was tasty and very rich, and came with a side of fries (crispy and good) with three dipping sauces.  My brunch companion tried a Belgian waffle, which really should be labeled “dessert” instead of brunch, as it came with chocolate sauce and ice cream!

Best Kidney Transplant Center:  Two out of two interested friends agreed, the New York Presbyterian Hospital a.k.a. Columbia University.  Best for all your kidney transplant needs.

Best Noodle Shop:  It was so good, I went there twice.  I needed a quick lunch around Williamsburg, Brooklyn, before heading into my friend’s show.  Luckily, a new noodle bar had just opened right around the corner - M Noodle Shop.  Especially since I was getting a little sick from the rain and walking around with wet feet all day, the spicy beef noodle soup was exactly what I needed.  The meat was good quality, the noodles freshly made, the broth very tasty.  I was so impressed I brought my friends back after the show and we devored a wide range of pork products:  steamed pork buns (not quite so good, tasted a little over steamed), pork potstickers (awesome, how can you go wrong with pot stickers?) and pork dumpling soup (also quite good).

Best Spanish Swashbuckling Sword ShowThe Buccaneer!  I read my friend’s play way back in college, and I’m happy to see how much it’s developed and improved over the years (it was fun 10 years ago, now it’s really fun).

The cast was hilarious – especially amusing were the bucaneer’s excellent reading and facial expressions, the Queen’s accent, finger puppets, and awesome looniness, and all of the cast member’s committment and physicality.

I enjoyed the show so much I saw it twice – seriously!  If you want am amusingly fun romp through Isabella’s Spain, check it out, there’s two more shows

Best Subway Line:  The A.  When your hostess is at 207 and Broadway you spend serious quality time on the A.

Best Hot ChocolateOrganicoa’s super tasty hot chocolate also sports a pretty nice view!  If you’re walking in the high line park (series of boardwalks built on an elevated 1930s rail structure located on Manhattan’s West Side), you will run across the little Organicoa trolley.  They serve hot chocolate, cookies, and a few other treats.  The chocolate had a very creamy, almost coconutty flavor, and was warm enough to keep us out in the chill enjoying the beautiful view across the river and into the skyline of New Jersey (I know that doesn’t sound cool, but it was pretty).  Apparently Organicoa is branching out – perhaps we will find them in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park?

Best Holiday Shopping:  I was glad that Kim suggested we head to the Union Square Holiday Market.  The outdoor booths had a wonderful holiday feel, nestled close into the confines of the Greenwich Village park.  Everyone had a festive mood, and the vendors were giving samples of food and drink, as well as offering a chance to cuddle with the numerous stuffed animals, cute hats and warm scarves.  Not only did I pick up a few fun gifts for friends and family, it was nice to admire the handicraft styles from around the world.  Definitely not the best place for a bargain (unless you’re living on high end yuppy salary) but a fun experience and a grand place to find a special something.

Christy Funch this weekend

So much dancing to see!  I think every company in the Bay Area wants to perform before the holidays hit (and all anyone wants to see if Nutcracker).

There are so many shows going up next weekend, but I am planning to attend the Down and Dirty festival at Dance Mission Theater, particularly to see Christy Funch do her thing – apparently she is a most amazing performer, full of subtle expression and huge emotional impact.

As well, the SF Hip Hop festival is this weekend!  Featuring local performers and guest artists from around the globe, this is a fun celebration of the diverse dance styles included under “hip hop”.  There’s even a master class at Dance Mission on Saturday from 2-5 if you’d like to learn a little dancing yourself.  Sweet!

Halloween

The only problem with attending the beautiful Oracle Diwali performances – they were at the same time as Googleween!  So I didn’t get to see all my crazy Google friends dressed up in awesome costumes (and vice versa).  I had lots of folks ask what I was for Halloween…

Let’s say I was “an artistic impression of a zebra”.

It was a great Halloween, but a little tough trying to dress for all the different parties – one was a little more family oriented, and one had the theme of “fishnets” for which I wore a fishnet top and Heraldo dressed as a pirate (who likes fish nets) – tough to make costumes work for multiple parties!

Thanks to Scott for the great photos, and yes, black and white is a great way to cure funky light balance!

It’s funny, as a kid I would plan for months and months what I was going to be for Halloween, and spend tons of time (and my Dad’s time) creating elaborately constructed costumes.  I think the biggest was a 1 dollar bill that we made out of the box that a refrigerator comes in.  I fit entirely inside the box, and we painted the outside with all the details of a 1 dollar bill.  It was a fun idea but a pain in the neck to wear.

I think one of our best successes was the year I went as the constellation Orion.  Dad fitted me out with a battery pack and LED lights that blinked in the same spots are the stars in the Orion constellation.  Good use of his EE degree.

But these days, I have so many dance performances that creating wacky costumes is regular occurrence and I find myself spending a lot less time on Halloween.

I guess when you’re dressing up in lederhosen, lenghas, and rhinestone sparkly dresses all in one week, the chance to dress up for Halloween is just less of a big deal.  But it is a fun chance to do something that’s a little off beat – something that doesn’t have a “direct purpose” the way most of dance costumes do.  I guess that’s why I end up with whimsical costumes like “Zebra-ish”.

So what were you for Halloween?

Oracle Diwali videos

Yeah! We finally have some videos of the Bollywood dance performances at the Oracle Diwali celebration.

Here’s the video from Desi Girl performance:

and Here’s the video from Marjaani performance:

All Oracle employees and family members are welcome to take Bollywood dance class at Oracle on Fridays at 3 pm, see you then!

Photos from Oracle Diwali

Oracle Diwali 1I had a great time watching the Oracle Diwali show, I happened to sit down right next to one of my dancer’s mother, father, and children!  It was fun to chat with Vidya’s family while waiting for the show.

I’m amused by the photos that the photographer took of the crowd – you can see just how many people (apparently 1,500?) that packed into the Oracle basketball court / gym to watch the show.  Can you find me?  My face shows right over the shoulder of Vidya’s father, and it must be later in the show because Surbhi’s sister, Sugeeti, is sitting next to me.  She joined us in time to watch her sister dance in the last number of the show, Marjaani.  It’s so fun having two sisters in two different classes – and they each got to dance to Marjaani in their own workplace.  Small world, eh?

I’m a little easier to find in this photo – although I have a funny look on my face!

Desi Girl 1

These are the six dancers who performed in Desi Girl:  Anita, Archana, Sunita, Vidya, Cathy, and Surabhi.  Good job ladies!

Thanks again to Vidya for getting such beautiful for sarees for everyone to dance in – and good job to Surbhi and Vidya and Pooma for getting everyone dressed in the sarees.  And they all stayed on just fine!  Hoorah for safety pins.  =)

I was so pleased that this dance was selected to open the show.

I think the audience immediately got excited by the music and started to clap along, and the ladies danced with great enthusiasm and grace.  Good job!

Marjaani 1Here are the ladies in the middle of Marjaani:  Smita, Anita, Surbhi, Cristal, Pooma, Surbhi, Vidya, and Sunita (sorry you got hidden in the back!)

Thank you for such a clean and energetic performance to end the show.  You could tell how much the audience appreciated the dancing with all their clapping and shouts – great job!

Looking forward to seeing everyone back in class on Friday at 3 pm.

Diwali at Oracle

lengha photo 1Congratulations to all the dancers / musicians / actors who performed at the Oracle Diwali – what a show!

I was impressed by the content of the “skits” that the actors / singers performed in between the dance numbers.  Usually I find skits to be tedious and just want to get on to the dancing.  Although some of the skits were a little slow / long, I found the content to be interesting, especially in respect to Indian families and friends and work.

It was also really fun to see how interactive the Emcees were with the audience.  The audience was willing to sing along in the microphone, answer questions, and even tell jokes on the fly!  I thought the audience was much more willing to participate than audiences I have seen in the past.

I was very proud of my groups who performed the opening number to “Desi Girl” and the closing number to “Marjaani” – they did very well with their steps and looked great because they smiled and enjoyed themselves!

I don’t yet have photos / video from the show – I am sure I will get them soon. In the meantime, I was pretty happy with the new blue lengha that I had for that day. It served well at Oracle Diwali, and I wore it later that evening at Cheryl Burke Starlite to teach the beginner’s class (salsa, rumba, and waltz). It was fun to dance in, but I forgot that they would have a hard time seeing my footsteps in such a long skirt! Oh well, it was still fun to swirl around.

If you have videos or photos from the show, please comment and post them below – I would love to see them!

lengha-photo-2

It’s really nice having my favorite photographer back in town – missed you bebe!
